The Lord continued to say that Judah's sin was known to them because it was written on their hearts. God was so angry with them that He would cause them to serve their enemies in an unknown land.
These are words that are true for us today:
Cursed is the man who trust in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord.
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the LORD...
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
Next, Jeremiah prayed to the Lord for deliverance:
Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for You are my praise.
You are my hope in the day of doom. Let them be ashamed who persecute me. Bring on them the day of doom, and destroy them with double destruction.
I suppose Jeremiah finally became fed up like the Lord, and had no more patience for the people.
Finally, the Lord commanded that the Sabbath be hallowed, but the people did not obey. They were stiff-necked and refused to receive instruction. Therefore, the LORD sent destruction.
COMMENTARY
God has warned us, even through Jeremiah, not to trust in men. We shall be blessed if we trust only in Him.
In this chapter, we know that only God can know our hearts, and only He can change our hearts, or perform a heart transplant. This is a spiritual process. All men are born with a corrupt heart. But the Lord can change our hearts.
The Lord provides a sanctuary for us, in Him, where we can be safe and have peace. God gave certain cities to His people as sanctuary and refuge. But because they continuously disobeyed and turned their backs on Him, He permitted those cities to be destroyed.
Today we have a sanctuary in Christ Jesus. He has asked us to come. We would do well to obey, and go to Him.
