Jeremiah 19

The Lord told Jeremiah to get a potter's earthen flask and gather some of the elders of the people and priests and go to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom and proclaim the words that God gave to him: that God is bringing a catastrophe on that place because they had forsaken God and burned incense to other gods and built altars to Baal and burned their children as offerings to him. Therefore, Hinnom shall be called the Valley of Slaughter. God will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem and they will fall by the sword. The people will resort to cannibalism because of long sieges and famine.

Then the Lord told Jeremiah to break the flask as a sign that He will break the people and the city because He is the Potter and can do as He will.

COMMENTARY

The Valley of the Son of Hinnom was significant because it was where the people worshipped Moloch and sacrificed their children to Baal. Therefore, God would permit their enemies to slaughter the people who committed this evil there, and that the place would be referred to as the Valley of Slaughter.

God warned, pleaded, and entreated, but their hearts were unrelenting. The clay had resisted the hand of the Potter too long. Very soon the enemy would come and shatter the nation in pieces.
