Jeremiah wept and lamented over the hardness of the hearts of God's people who would not hear Him. The people did not want the truth, they lied and their mouths were full of deceit, they slandered their neighbor, they were hypocrites, and they still worshipped the Baals.
In judgment, the people realized their doom. They knew they were plundered, cast out, and they were ashamed.
Then the Lord said:
Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches, but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For these I delight.
The days are coming when the Lord will punish the circumcised with the uncircumcised (Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab, all who are in the farthest corners...and the wilderness) because the House of Israel are uncircumcised in their hearts.
COMMENTARY
This chapter demonstrates Jeremiah's own personal heartbreak over the news that his nation was going to be destroyed. He was in tears when he gave the Lord's message to the people in the gates.
Jeremiah's message is relevant even today. Our nation is no different than the House of Israel that trusted in men, power, government, riches, man-made gods, and godless philosophies. Like the people of Jeremiah's day, we, individually, need to turn back to the Lord.
