The Lord told Jeremiah to tell the house of the king of Judah to hear the word of the LORD to execute judgment and righteousness and deliver the plundered out of the hand of the oppressor; stop mistreating the stranger, orphans, and widows; and enact justice. If they obeyed, then they "shall enter the gates of this house, riding on horses and in chariots, accompanied by servants and people, kings who sit on the throne of David," which is a future prophecy!
But if they do not hear these words, then the house will become a desolation. Everyone will ask why the LORD had done this, and the answer will be: "Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and worshipped other gods and served them."
To the sons of Josiah, Shallum and Jehoiakim, they shall not return to the city. They did wickedly by abusing their power, by robbing from the poor to build their great palaces. The Lord spoke to them in their prosperity, but they did not hear. Therefore, one will die in captivity in Babylon and the other will die in a siege against Babylon, left to die like a donkey.
Also, to Coniah, son of Jehoiakim: he will die, childless, in Babylon. He shall never prosper again.
COMMENTARY
This is the chapter of judgment against the last kings of Judah. The rich were acquiring wealth and prosperity and the poor were being mistreated and neglected. The Lord will judge the way the rich obtain their wealth and how they spend or use their money. The laws are usually in favor of the wealthy keeping more of their money, even though politicians proclaim to make the rich pay their fair share. It's just a ruse. The politicians know how to get elected.
Even in America, our greatest struggle is not racial; it's class. Communism would never have become this popular if it were not for the struggle between the filthy rich and the very poor. God will judge this inequality.
Now, here is an interesting bit of Bible trivia:
God said that no descendant of Josiah will ever sit on the throne of David or rule anymore in Judah, which was why Joseph could not have been the father of Jesus. Joseph was in the line of Jeconiah, Josiah's son. Joseph's line, which came through the son of David (Solomon) gave Jesus the legal title to the throne. But Jesus is not a descendant of that line because He is virgin born. Therefore, it is from the genealogy of His mother, Mary, through David's son (Nathan) where He received the blood title to the throne of David.
This is why God called the earth to listen: "O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord." He still worked it out that the Messiah would be the descendant of King David. And only He is worthy to sit on the throne.
